1hr from Preston / Claife Heights, Windermere

The photo at the bottom is a classic lakeland view. Well worth the walk described (sic) below. If you don't have a map or guidebook you'll probably not find it going this way, it's about 8 miles with steep parts. An easy route is to park in the village of Little Sawry, its only a mile or so of fairly easy walking. Or you could park in Hawkshead which is bit farther away.

Cross Windermere on the ferry from Bowness to Hawkshead. Turn right along the lake shore. Following a narrow lane past campsites and caravan sites to the old boathouse. About a mile, maybe more. You'll pass a squirrel feeding viewing platform and your nearly there.

Turn left heading uphill on the old road from the old ferry point that crosses Claife Heights to Hawkshead. Imagine that ponies towed large wagons up here. How?

Without a map you'll not find the way now. There are lots of criss-crossing woodland paths.

Here is a moss covered tree stump. If you pass this you are on the right track. At least for now.

After you've crossed several paths and left the Hawkshead path, you are in woodland. If you see this you are on the right track. Is it Helvellyn?

Here is the view. There is a little boathouse on the far side of the lake. With a telephoto it would look great against the Langdales in the background.
