The overall influence for the weather in Preston is the Gulf Stream Drift which makes the weather mild for the latitude.

Preston being located on the west side of the Pennine Hills gets moist and mild weather systems from the Atlantic which tend to drop their moisture on reaching land and the hills to the east. The temperature is also moderated slightly by the Irish Sea and its low level above the sea, approx 100ft.
