Calorificity Cholesterol Awareness

During an eye examination the optician said it would be worth having my cholesterol checked. It's an age thing. Something about cholesterol in the eye being a warning of possible arterial condition. The doctor said it was pretty normal but I could improve the ratio of high to low density thinga-mejigs.
Having looked into this a bit more it's a complicated business. None of this may be true. One mans bad may be anothers good so don't take my word for it. Saturated fats and trans-fats are said to cause the body to create more of a bad type of cholesterol. The bad type being low density things (LDL). When what would be good is more high density things (HDL). Trans-fats are hydrogenated fats used to make confectionary have a higher shelf life. Saturated fats are in animal fats usually the sort that don't melt at room temperature, like butter, meat fat. Unlike say olive oil which they say is good stuff, especially virgin. It is said that oats and linseed are good at improving the cholesterol balance through absorption in oats and the right omega in linseed, flax. It says somewhere that it is good to get less than 30% of calories from fat. Of this less than 10% of calories from saturated fats, 10% from polyunsaturated, 15% from monounsaturated fats. So I read that 1g of fat gives 9 calories and 1g of carbohydrate/protein gives 4 calories. If I want to eat 2000 calories a day then under 30% should be from fat. So I can eat 2000 divided by 9 = 222g of fat. Of this only 10% must be saturated so I can eat 22g of saturated. So if butter is 80% saturated I can eat 22 divided by 0.8 = 27g of butter or just under an ounce - if I don't eat any other saturated fat which is unlikely. Cheese, meat, biscuits, cake! Doesn't sound a lot, I think I need more than 2000 calories so I can ratio this up a bit perhaps 25% to 34g. This figure of weight of fat per day should be known. The percentage on the pack helps you calculate it. No good thinking you can eat 30% fat. The daily allowance is percentage of calories not percentage of weight. If you ate nothing but food from a pack saying 30% fat by weight you would actually be eating double your daily allowance % allowance of fat. Work it out. Then go and work-out! The above may be wrong for you. |
