Festival 2006

Edinburgh Festival 2007 we went Sunday to Tuesday inclusive. The weather was a bit cloudy, coolish and one day very wet.

Things we did in order of doing are listed below and comment on them follows below;

Adam Hills - Joymonger - comedy - Assembly Halls.

Andy Warhol - exhibition at the National Gallery.

John Hegley - Letters to an Earwig - comedy / poetry - Pleasance.

Arts and Crafts Movement in Scotland / Beyond Appearances - Exhibition - City Art Centre.

Gods Pottery - theatre - Pleasance.

John Otway - music - Three Sisters.

Picasso on paper - Dean Gallery

Last South, Scott and Amundson - Theatre - Pleasance.

In and Out of the theatre - Rodney Bewes - Assembly Halls.

Michael McIntyre - comedy - Pleasance.

We looked around the book festival but its a bit bookish for me. We ate each night at David Bann and had some great meals. Wandered around the craft market and the gardens in Princes Street.

Adam Hills - Joymonger - comedy

Quite a large, by fringe standards, auditorium at the Assembly Halls and full in the lower section. Stand Up comedy by the Australian comic. Started off picking on the audience - there were 2 dressed as Batman and Robin so obviously looking for the attention they got. People next to us had seen him several times and so had others. He was quite funny and best on his Australian material I thought. The audience liked him.

Andy Warhol - exhibition at the National Gallery.

Exhibition of his Campbell Soup boxes, artwork and some doom laden stuff. Everything has a time and you need to sit in the perspective of his originality. The soup boxes and cow wallpaper stick in the mind. He was obviously a leading personality, can't say his art did a lot for me but worth seeing.

John Hegley - Letters to an Earwig - comedy / poetry

Material a lot better than last year. Usual full house. Phil Jupitus was in the audience, don't think JH was aware. Poetry, jokes, surprises and facials - all done well and very worth seeing.

Arts and Crafts Movement in Scotland / Beyond Appearances - Exhibition

Lot of well known Arts and Crafts artists came from Scotland. Interesting exhibition of works and story of its origins. Also an art exhibition by leading Scottish Artists called Beyond Appearances starring a blue canvas.

Gods Pottery - theatre

Jesus movement spoof - I think. Thought some of it a bit close to the knuckle and didn't want to laugh. Well performed by the American duo with Powerpoint multimedia presentation. Worth seeing.

John Otway - music

New venue for us - 3 sisters. John Otway sitting in the bar talking to the audience before the show. Then talking on stage in a sort of giggly nervous way. But transformed into a man of energy and power as he plays his guitar and sings. Also plays the Theramin and a few of his personally made instruments. Worth seeing.

Picasso on paper - Dean Gallery

Interesting exhibition. Was unaware of the techniques used by Picasso. Etching, lithography and linography. Also something else that I've forgotten. Lived to be 93 and kept busy to the end. Lots of wives and good story all round as well as the art. Very good.

Last South, Scott and Amundson - Theatre

Two actors known from TV drama sitting telling the story of the race to the South Pole. Really enjoyed it, well acted and gripping story. Very good.

In and Out of the theatre - Rodney Bewes

Jerome K Jerome book told by Rodney. Last year he did Three men in a boat. Hadn't heard of this book and it wasn't as funny or interesting. Seemed to be a lot of distractions in the auditorium near us and Rodney usually turns forgetting his lines into a laugh but in this case the story became a bit lost on me.

Michael McIntyre - comedy.

Hadn't seen him before but was probably the best show we saw. Full of energy and cheer. My wife sat next to Jenny Eclair who seemed to go in anonymously. Loads of great jokes and audience interaction. Don't know where he thought most of that up. Great show.
