Cost of Plastering

Got a quote from a plasterer to re-board a wall and the ceiling and to skim in our smallest room 18 square metres of plaster. £410.

Sounds a lot although he was recommended by a decorator I know. I thought around £300 a reasonable price. I think he could do it in under 2 days and materials aren’t much. I’ve seen these guys work and plasterers seem to be leaving almost as soon as they arrive. Do you get what you pay for or should I get another quote.

I’ve always avoided plastering but having taken the tiles off, removed the plasterboard on one wall and fitted a frame for a false ceiling I have the urge to carry on and maybe buy  better fittings with the saving. I reckon that 3 sheets of plasterboard, 50kg of plaster, edging, nails and a plasterers toolset will cost under £100.

A lot of it will depend on where you are with regards to local rates. I’m in Cheshire and would probably charge around the £300 you mention. London and Essex prices are a lot higher though

Thanks for your comment Knutsford Plasterer. Most comments are spam and you have an unusual e-mail address like a finance company. If it is spam it’s better than most so I let it through.

I’m going for the £100 option. I got the plasterboard delivered today and bought some plasterboard nails. I enjoy a bit of DIY and am looking forward to the first plastered wall.

There is a boundary where the saving of DIY becomes worthwhile so £300 means that if you ovespend and it becomes difficult then DIY isn’t worth it. When it gets to £400 there’s loads of buffer and a decent saving for a free day at the races is guaranteed.

Took me 2 weeks to put up plasterboard walls, make false ceiling and plaster the room. It’s still not finished as there are quite a lot of blemished patches that I’m fixing one by one.

In hindsight if this was a significant room in the house I’d definitely pay for a good job. On this small washroom I’ll make it right and it’s been an interesting experience but it’s not the best of jobs. I still wouldn’t pay £400 although £300 would be OK. In fact I’d pay someone now a small amount to go over the ceiling and 2 walls.
